A beautiful  ROYAL GRAFTON Fine Bone China FOOTED Slightly Scalloped CUP & SAUCER, Striking HAND PAINTED Nature Scene w/YELLOW & GREEN TREE LEAVES, RED BERRIES & GRASS w/GOLD Trim, Circa 1950-1956 from Longton, Staffordshire, England
DESCRIPTION:
This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid.  This is hand painted on a blank of white china with gold trim on the rims.  Since this is hand painted, there is slight variation in the painting which just adds to the charm of the set.  The colors used are: yellow, green, brown & red on white with gold trim on the rims.  There are two striking features about this set.  One is the green & yellow painting on the handle (& no gold).  The other is the green, yellow & brown grass painted around the inside of the bottom of the cup.
CONDITION:
While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines.  There is an indentation on the back rim of the saucer which can not be seen from the front and is smooth to touch on the back.  This was done in the manufacturing process since it has both gold & glaze over it.  See photo #10.  There are no utensil marks or wear to the gold.
DIMENSIONS:
The cup has a diameter of 3 3/4" with a height of 2 1/8".  The deep saucer has a diameter of 5 9/16" and a height of 7/8".
HISTORY/MARKS:
Alford Bailey Jones in 1876 began working as a decorator and potter.  By 1900, he constructed the Grafton Works in Longton, Staffordshire, England.  The business was run by his family until it was sold in 1966 to Crown House Glass, Ltd.  The name was not changed until 1971 when it was renamed Crown Lynn Ceramics, Ltd.  The mark on this is identified by Geoffrey A. Godden’s Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks as mark #2200 which was used in the 1950-1956 time period.
