Pearlware Childs Miniature Dinner Set TrayASIATIC BIRDS with FRUIT
Charles Meigh Staffordshire England 1850
This is a very scarce miniature dinner set tray dated 1850, originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service. The tiny oval platter measures 4-1/2 inches long with tab handles and a flat footless bottom. Clear green transfer printed decoration finished with pearlware glaze, extremely well potted, to the standards usually only seen in full-size Staffordshire table wares. Decorated with a Romantic Chinoiserie image of Asiatic pheasants or oriental looking birds and a butterfly on tree branches and an abundant bowl of fruit, bordered with contrasting dotted bead border trim. A particularly pretty pattern and an elegant form.
The tray is unmarked. The pattern, sometimes called Asiatic Pheasant, is documented by Doris Lechler as pattern #223. The pattern is also discussed on page 113 in Milbourn's
Understanding Miniature British Pottery & Porcelain
.
The tray is in great condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Stilt marks kiln fleck border transfer skip and other typical manufacturing imperfections, original to the making, consistent with age. A delicate little piece to display in the finest dollhouse, a pocket size work of art! Children's soft paste transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. Offered as described and as shown.
We have also listed other early child's colorful transferware this week -- mix and match for a lovely collection. We are always happy to combine postage on multiple purchases.
