This miniature white ironstone octagonal panelled sugar or sucrier was originally part of a complete childs tea set dating to c1850. Simply elegant, and elegantly simple, with clean lines and modest details, a studied contrast to some of the busy and highly decorated ceramics. The sugar is unmarked; it is an example of the GRAPE pattern, with a cluster of grapes for a finial. It was made in the mid 19th century by one of the many pottery manufactories in the Staffordshire region of England, possibly Brown Westhead & Moore.
The sugar stands 4-1/2 inches tall with an inset lid with a decorative ‘grape’ finial and twig handles. Possibly a married piece, there is a steam hole in the lid.
The
piece
is in great condition, especially considering it was played with by generations of children.
